EO Spotlight: Oregano

Oregano essential oil is made from the leaves of the Origanum vulgare plant which is well known for its uses in cooking. Oregano EO has many unique properties that support cellular health as well as proper immune system function. It is also an excellent source of antioxidants. The primary component of Oregano is carvacrol, a phenol that possesses antioxidant properties when ingested.

As we approach a time generally known for an increase in the sneezes and sniffles, its helpful to know just one drop of Oregano oil can help maintain immune function when used daily. Oregano can also be taken more often when seasonal threats are high or as needed to further boost immunity. Take up to 2 drops in a veggie capsule and repeat as needed.

For regular immune support, use Oregano Touch on the bottom of your feet before bed. Note that I said Oregano Touch. Oregano is a hot oil and should always be diluted when applied to the skin. The “Touch” oils are all pre-diluted for safe topical use. Pro tip: I even add carrier oil to my veggie caps when I take hot oils orally!

Remember - diluting an EO with a carrier oil doesn’t “dilute” the effects of the oil, it actually allows it to work better. By mixing with a carrier oil before applying typically topically you are giving the essential oil a chance to absorb into the skin rather than be lost to evaporation. Mixing with carrier oils also allows you to cover a larger surface area with just a drop or two of EO. Our oils are potent and a little goes a long way! Plus, by diluting you minimize the changes of developing a skin sensitivity.

Check out the infographic below to see some of the differences between the most popular carrier oils:

I got a little side tracked there with safety but that’s a priority for me so I can’t say it won’t happen again. Okay moving on!

Did you know that you can also use your Oregano oil in your cooking? Homemade soup with oregano and black pepper EO is one of my favorite ways to boost my immune system when I need it most. If you or someone you know is feeling under the weather or needs a pick me up, give this recipe a try:

In general, just remember that oregano is cleansing and purifying and it’s a great support to the immune system as well as the digestive and respiratory systems.
